Why is the odometer on my 850 wagon stuck?

Q: I have a 1994 Volvo 850 wagon. The odometer has been stuck at 156.8 K for at least a month now....maybe longer. When I try to press the button to reset the trip meter, nothing happens. Why is this happening?

A: the odometer has a tiny electric motor that drives a plastic gear, that in turn drives the digit counter. at high mileages the plastic gear fails a tiny chip off one of the teeth is all that is necessary for failure. the labor involved in replacing the gear is not that long however it is kind of intense. an improved gear is available from ipd usa. or you can purchase a motor with gear assembly from volvo [ipd also has an installation video disc available for do it yourselfers [this is definitely recommended for first timers]
