Q: hi i would like to know, beetween the diesel and the non-diesel is the diesel way way way slower or just a little bit, cause i am looking to buy one for the toughness and fuel economy, but i would like to have speed and acceleration. so how slower is the diesel turbo? please be specific.
A: The diesel isn't much slower than the 2.0 liter gas engine it was offered with. It's also probably easier to drive since the torque is more readily available at a low RPM with a diesel, you won't have to downshift as much to gain speed (granted you get one with a manual). I wouldn't get one with an automatic since it would seem too sluggish. I had a '98 Jetta 2.0 with a 4-speed auto and it was a dog.
