A: Well as far as I was aware AM signals are picked up without the need of an external aerial. Sounds to me like the connection between your new replacemet aerial and your radio is damaged - either the wire between the two is damaged, or it is not connected at both ends - if you have no joy at the aerial end, try removing your stereo and make sure when the theiving buggers stole your aerial they didn't pull the wire so hard that it popped off the back off your head unit! Bloody theiving buggers - do my swede!
