i have a 1991 peugeot 205 and it has started backfiring and losing throtle response, what could cause this?

Q: i have had a tinker with the engine but cannot find anything obviously wrong, any ideas? thanks

A: BACKFIRING! I can repair the 205 in my sleep. NOBODY YET has offered you a solution. Backfiring will be a sign that the spark plug is firing when the exhaust valve is still open. (a small explosion escapes through the exhaust pipes immediately) I strongly suspect you have switched 2 spark plug wires to the wrong cylinders???. The firing order is 1-3-4-2 as the distributor spins, sending a spark to cylinder 1, then 3, 4 2. You have no throttle response because TWO spark plugs are firing when the piston is on the up stoke, to force the exhaust out of the cylinder. The exhaust valve is open, and the spark plug wrongly fires too late. The spark ignites petrol fumes that are STILL in the cylinder, because they didn't get ignited after the compression stroke. When petrol vapour above a piston fires too soon/late, it sends the piston downward too soon/late. You have a jerky hesitation of your engine, and two pistons are fighting each other... SECONG THOUGHT: You need your valves adjusted, they are VERY out of adjustment. Do this when the engine is cold. WORST CASE: Your rubber timing belt is old enough to have stretched a small amount, and the tensioner pulley has failed to take up the slack. Your camshaft pulley has slightly changed its position in relation to the crankshaft pulley, causing your valves to open and close too soon/late. This is very serious and will worsen, possibly break! How long has it been since you replaced the timing belt? 60k km? email me directly if you wish to know how to do that valve adjustment......trevor. PS: There is NO timing chain on this 1991 car to jump teeth. Fuel filter or pump is not the problem either.
