Q: ive brought a 1996 306 xsi wondering what i could in way of a check up dont want to spend to much but just check everything is fine ???

A: Here's a NO COST list of things you can do: 1. Fill the tank up, write down the miles, drive around a few days, refill the tank and calculate your petrol use. 40 mpg? very good. 2. Remove the spark plug closest to the clutch (far left side). Is it light brown and dry? good! Black and oily / sooty? not good. 3. Look at the engine. Do you see any oily, greasy, black, slimy leaks? Around the vavle cover? Along the front of the engine? bad! 4. Check all fluid levels when the engine is cold. Water = coolant, oil. Check power steering fluid (if you have it) when hot. Listen for radiator fans to come ON...when engine reaches about 90 degrees (see gauge on dashboard). HERE IS A PHOTO of all the places to check on the 306: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh155/trevor_trillion/Peugeot306enginefluids.jpg PS = Power steering B = Brake fluid min/max 5. Remove all powdery corrosion from battery terminals. rinse with baking soda and water. 6. Hold a piece of paper (with thumb and one finger) over the exhaust pipe while the engine is running. The paper should rapidly blow away from the pipe. IF THE PAPER is sucked against the pipe, once every second, you need your 8 valves adjusted. This takes 30 minutes when engine is cold. 7. Examine front tires for uneven wear. Less tread on the inside edge? outside edge? You need an 'alignment'. 8. While the car is idling in neutral...Step on the brakes VERY HARD, and keep the pressure ON. You should not feel any "oozing" and slow sinking of the brake pedal. "oozing" downwards means you need a new Master Brake Pump. 9. By removing one front tyre, you can see the thickness of the Brake disc (rotor) 10mm is maximum, 7mm = replace. And the brake pads....5mm is minimum in my opinion! Now, replace the tyre, and leave it off the ground. Wheel should spin freely by HAND, and stop immediately when someone inside the car applies the brake pedal. Release pedal, and tyre should spin easily again. BRAKE PISTON is OK! 10. Check the air filter on your fuel injection system. You open a plastic lid to remove the filter. Hold it up to the sun..can you see light through it? If not, it should be replaced. More airflow = better mileage. 10. Maybe I'll think of more later....or other mechanics can add to my list of easy / free things??
