Q: Hi all, the temp of my (m reg) dturbo was going through the roof this morning (100+) and all fans came on. It also intermittently made a horrific noise sounding like a duck being strangled every now and again which occasionally went on for a while! when I put the blowers on full heat to cool it down it was blowing cold air aswell!! I've been told this could be the thermostat, is it easy to replace? Also the radiator seems to be leaking slightly, and have been told radweld would fix it, would this work?

A: ...and the water is NOT circulating properly. (I believe you meant to say). Thermostat: if it is stuck in the closed position, your car will get too hot, and your water will not circulate through the radiator NOR the heater ....thus cold air. If your water = coolant level is too low, the temperature gauge will be inaccurate, and the water will not circulate properly. Have you checked your coolant reserve tank? Minimum / maximum level?? On the 306, it is easy to change the thermostat. Look for the thermostat housing. see this photo: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh155/trevor_trillion/306thermostat003.jpg 1. Drain some coolant until the level is below the thermostat. 2. Not always necessary to remove rubber hose from thermostat neck. 3. Remove only two bolts, and notice which way the thermostat spring is pointing....you don't want to install the new one backwards, it is possible! 4. Scrape away all old gasket material, insuring a perfect mating surface upon refitting. In the photo, the very tall bolt, loosened with a hex / allen wrench, it is the "air release" . Allow all trapped air in the system to escape there. If you are curious to see if the thermostat WAS INDEED the problem, you can test it in a pot of water on the cooker. Use a thermometer tht does NOT touch the bottom of the pot. Watch the temp rise, and the thermostat should open at 87 C and be fully opened at 90 C. But never put the old one back in..you've opened it anyway. PS: I have no experience with "radweld". Some liquids with rubber particles, have been known to work temporarily. The radiator can be easily replaced by yourself too.
