Any hints on unscrewing the cap above the fuel pump in a peugeot 306 petrol?

Q: Underneath the back seat, there's 2 rubber bungs. left one leads you to the fuel pump and filter... however it is seemingly impossible to unscrew this cap. The cap seems to be right on top of the fuel tank, screwing into it. is there anyone with experience ? edit: sorry i dont think i made this clear to some - i have popped out the left rubber bung. I'm having trouble with the plastic screw (as far as i can tell) cap, beneath the bung, which leads to the fuel pump. cheers

A: The rubber bung can be lever out by a screwdriver, underneath you will see a ribbed black plastic circle with fuel pipes and wires connecting to the pump in the centre of the circle. The ribbed black edge you can see around the pump is actually a seperate ring holding the pump in. Disconnect the fuel pipes and electrical connector from the top of the pump and unscrew that black ring anti-clockwise. There is actually a 3 legged tool designed to sit onto the ribs of the ring to allow you to use a ratchet to unscrew it, but since you won't have that i would suggest using a large screwdriver or cold chisel, something that you can hammer and that has a very blunt end. place the blunt end on the ribs and tap the screwdriver with a hammer to unscrew the ring. If your screwdriver is too sharp then you will just keep breaking the ribs off of the ring. When the ring is unscrewed you will see that the pump sits on a rubber o-ring seal (weatherseal) make sure this is correctly seated when refitting the pump as it can come out of place quite easily without you noticing, and then you would leak fuel when the tank was full. If you are looking for the fuel filter though then you are looking in the wrong place. The fuel filter can be found on one side of the tank (it varied which side it was on) underneath the car. It will be either a black plastic or silver metal cylinder slightly smaller than a coke can, with a pipe clipped on either end. It will be held to the car by a plastic strap. Pull the filter out of the strap (awkward) and press the coloured plastic parts of the pipe ends to release them. Hope this helps.
