Which Peugeot or Citroen gearboxes fit directly to a 1994 Peugeot 306, 1.4Ltr?

Q: I need some advice if anyone can tell me which gearboxes fit directly to a 1994 Peugeot 306, 1.4Ltr...? I really need a shorter gear ratio, which would be ideal for the short and winding streets of Malta. So I was thinking of fitting a gearbox from a 1.1Ltr 205, or something of the sort... But I'm not sure which gearbox would fit directly. I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out with this one. Cheers.

A: I just answered a similar question about the 106 gearboxes. See this one: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Asaf3nhCKhKlDDkXSex6ef7ty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080322040859AA1KLzJ&show=7#profile-info-58mwZtuzaa Many of the 106, 306, 205 models from the 1990's have an engine in the TU family. Your 1.4 engine is a TU engine. BUT WHICH TU??(carburettor) Not an XU engine (fuel injected). Does your 306 have a TU3, TU3a...find out for yourself. YOU NEED an MA5 gearbox. Or maybe you'd prefer a MA gearbox with a 4 speed? Then look at older Peugeot 205's. Read my advice on choosing an MA gearbox that is "out of the car". (mating surface of gearbox and engine must match) AFTER you're sure the gearbox matches up to the engine, then you may have to change the gearshift linkage. The 306 (phase 1, 1994) has one big 'pipe' link with 2 swivels, entering the gearbox on top. The 205's have two linkage rods that enter the gearbox in two places. GET NEW linkage with your new gearbox?? HERE IS EVERY gear ratio for all the possible gearboxes of the MA4 and MA5 sort. You have to look for the identification label on your gearbox. http://www.suzukituning.com/PSA/MA5%20Gearbox/ma5gearratio.htm Here is a website for many gearbox ratios of Peugeot cars, especially the younger 205's. http://www.205gti.com/techgearboxUK.htm READ this about the 205, MA gearbox, 1988 to 1992, AND see all gear ratios in Yellow Print near the bottom of the page. Here is a close ratio kit for sale/ do it yourself 3,100 pounds: http://www.quaife.co.uk/CITROEN-PEUGEOT-GEAR-KIT-LAUNCH/newstype/7 But now you can read what "close ratio" actually is...read under the photo.
