Q: Whenever the steering wheel is turned right, there is a rumbling which sounds like it's coming from the wheel arches. This is quite a heavy rumbling vibration which can be felt both in the body of the car and the steering wheel. Any ideas on possible causes before I take it to a garage?

A: I have forgotten myself to fully tighten all 4 lug bolts before driving away! Have you forgotten? Then the wheel wobbles! Since you said wheel arch, I would also inspect the condition of the strut (shock absorbing) to see that is twists freely on a turn. Try bouncing that wheel fender when the car is parked, too. You shouldn't hear any noise, and the car shouldn't bounce at all. Down - Up - Stop! The shock strut is connected to the WHEEL HUB and the steering tie rod ends, and this is why you feel it in the steering wheel. BECAUSE you said 'rumbling sound' and 'vibration', I am more inclined to believe the WHEEL BEARING could be a constant problem. When you turn to the right, more weight and stress is placed on the LEFT wheel. Is this your rumbling side? CV JOINTS, when suddenly starting to go bad, do NOT affect your steering wheel with heavy vibration as you've described. I have had a bad CV joint on my wife's car for 6 months now. Knock, Knock, Knock when turning right. It NEVER vibrates the steering. I'm just waiting for warm weather to change it.
