Q: My auxiliary drive belt has fallen off and i asked a mechanic and he says that it is hard to fit another one and it would take a while to fit. I looked inside my engine and i can see the altinator and just behind it is where the belt attaches from the altinator to the engine. This seems faily easy to reach in and fit. Is it very difficult?

A: You should buy the new belt and install it yourself! You will need some spanners to loosen the alternator and push it closer to the engine. (11, 13, 17 mm, I think) NOTICE its original position to the millimeter before loosening and moving it. (reposition = retighten to the same tension) IF YOU HAVE Power steering, there is a second belt, but I believe that belt is closer to the engine, therefore it can stay on. Slip the new belt over the pulleys. Retighten the alternator. As you tighten it, a screw pulls the alternator further, and the belt tightens. 1/2 inch depression with your finger is good. IF you tell me the engine type, I might be able to find a photo for you. I'm guessing you have a 1.6 L fuel injected? gti? REMOVING the alternator....?? now THAT takes some time.
