Q: the car acts normally in first gear.

A: I think that disc brakes are not affecting your reverse motion at all. Disc brake calipers would "stick" going forward or in reverse. You have no problem going forward in first gear. I believe you DO have rear drum brakes, and one or both of the rear drum brakes have a problem with ONE SHOE. Sometimes one of the shoes comes loose from its metal backing. You cannot repair or re-glue this! Sometimes one side does not self-adjust when turning backwards. (there are two jaws with teeth that slide on each other) Maybe your handbrake cable is rusted inside the sheath and affects the emergency brake somehow, on one side?.(doesn't release immediately) Open the drums one at a time and look for problems. Do you feel you have good braking power, with all 4 brakes??? THANK YOU TIM R.!!!
