1996 peugeot 306 very difficult to start, when started wont rev over 3500 rpm engine timing sounds retarted?

Q: with persistant cranking engine will start but will run like engine timing is retarded and will rev very slowly up to around 3500 rpm even under full throttle where engine revs will decrease by themself to about 2000 then you can bring revs slowly up to 3500 where the same thing will happen again. when the revs decrease at 3500 you can here a solenoid clicking sound

A: You may need to adjust the timing. But even "out of time" your car should start. "out of time" it will just have poor fuel economy, and less acceleration. I would suspect the clicking sound to be NOT related to the solenoid after the car is running... but rather that you need a liter of oil (or more!). The valves may be clicking from lack of oil lubrication at a low rpm. The 306 is one of the last Peugeot cars that you can "Time" yourself with tools and a strobe light, viewing the timing marks on the flywheel. Later cars have NO timing marks, and all is controlled by the ECU.
