Q:

A: Most books having an electrical schematic for the 306 will show the wire NUMBER, and the color of the wire CONNECTORS. Possible the number of wires in the connector, such as G4 which means green connector with 4 wires. You'll find the wire number printed in very small black ink every few inches on the wire. I own several Peugeot repair books. The newer ones (after 1980) have the system mentioned above. The older ones (1968 - 80) have colours indicated on the schematics, as you thought. I have the Electrical Schematics for the 306, published by PV Olving. And several books for other Peugeots by Haynes About the only thing you could rely on is: A ground wire can be brown, or black, or Green/yellow striped. A 12 volt feed source is normally red. White wires can be little accessory wires to guages, cig lighter, anything really. EDITED LATER: However, these 306 schematic drawings may?? have some colour abbreviations to them. There are several drawings here: http://peugeot.mainspot.net/wiring306/xu7jpz.shtml
