Q: How do I adjust the handbrake cable on a peugeot 306 1997 Thank you.

A: I am assuming it is very very similar to the 1998 205. Here goes. First place the lever on the seventh notch . 1. Chock the front wheels and jack up the back two wheels just 1 inch off the ground. Support rear axle on "jack stands" for safety! 2. Inside the car, remove the center plastic console around the brake lever. You will see how the two cables enter from under the floor of the car. 3. Slacken the lock nut and turn the adjustment nut on the rear of the cable compensator, so that both rear wheels are just binding on the rear brake shoes. (Rear wheels should turn with difficulty when pushed by your hands.) 4. Fully apply hand brake lever and make sure both wheels are FULLY locked. 5. Retighten the adjuster locknut, refit the plastic cover and lower car to the ground. 6. Over-adjustment (over-tightening) will prevent the automatic adjusters operating correctly, so make sure the handbrake is fully applied to the 7th to 9th notches, no fewer.
