Q: Hi, Im having some electrical problems with my 406 2.0 petrol estate. I've Had the AA out three times now to charge start my battery. I've now replaced the battery but Im still having problems. I now have a random engine light flash with a beep and sometimes a series of beeps. The main console display radio/clock doesn't work - and when I went to the car in the evening I saw that it was glowing - which may explain the battery going flat? Externally the lights work fine and there doesn't seem to be any mechanical problems. Also my passenger door was broken into only a week or so before these problems started - could it be related? Central locking works fine btw Thanks Trevor, Window wasn't broken they managed to warp the door to gain access - window works fine. does the stalk also control the centre console? that is where the light is coming on at night time. AA guy did pull the column apart and play about with the ignition switch etc. If I take it to the dealer and get a computer diagnostics check done is it likely to pin-point the problem?

A: I'm guessing you have a circuit that is always ON and it is draining the battery slowly...overnight...constantly. The broken window could have affected the central locking motors (not, you say), the window up/down switch, the window motor. All of these are grounded inside the same door. Have you tried the window this winter? The dashboard lights are first turned ON by the stalk on the steering column. This is a switch containg 7 switches for many things. They OFTEN GO BAD on the Peugeot 405 and 406. Try replacing, or even REMOVING it for 2 days, without driving. See if your battery holds its charge. Remove plastic covers around steering colum with small phillips. (a used one, even from a 306 ?, can work.) According to my 406 Owner's manual, the light for Engine diagnostics (a small engine outline) can come on when there are fuel injection problems, emmissions problems, catalytic converter damage. HELLO AGAIN. I 'm pretty sure the stalk controls nothing on the centre console. But there is your circuit drain! is there a switch that comes on when you open the console storage? Is it stuck ON? Just remove the darn bulb now! I can't see how the ignition wires would be the problem. With key OUT and car OFF, each of the 6? 8? wires could be tested for voltage, with a volt meter having very thin probes. NAGGING cuircuit drains I have had in my life: ceiling dome lamp, glove box lamp, radio on low volume, under the bonnet lamp never went off. None of these were Peugeot btw.
