does anyone know about peugoet 106's?

Q: The car farts and cuts out at low revs but runs ok at high. mid range it just dies...... it has a solex carburetor...

A: OK... I am totally guessing without more information. Your car "farts". Maybe you mean, "backfires?". Backfiring is the result of petrol vapour exploding at the wrong time... when the exhaust valve is still open. BAD. The sound of the explosion travels through the exhaust pipe and out the muffler/silencer. This means that your timing is off! Maybe, just maybe, your timing belt has slipped one rubber tooth in the wrong direction on the timing gear? Your engine would still run OK when the engine is racing, but then at a slow speed everything would definitely be worse. All 4 cylinders would be firing when the pistons are not compressing, but on the downward stroke, or the upward exhaust stroke. Very bad. Have your engine TIMING tested with a simple hand held STROBE LIGHT, connected to the #1 spark plug. This is a 30 second test you can do at home . You need to visually see the timing mark on the flywheel. Get a friend with this tool to help you. Or maybe your distributor has come loose from vibration, and rotated-in-place a small amount? This is very rare. Or maybe you have a problem with just ONE exhaust lifter spring??? no. that's also very rare. I don't think the carburetor is the problem at this point. Your car will be easier to work on since it doesn't have fuel injection.
