Q: I drove the van home nearly 300miles without any problem but have now noticed a lot of smoke coming from the exaust, although the head gasket has just been changed and new cambelt fitted the engine oil is very black and looks as though it could do with changing.Could this be the cause of the smoke? Also when i remove the radiator cap it hisses and the coolant bubbles up as though the engine was hot even though the engine hasn`t been run for 24hrs,could anyone help me with the cause of this? Also the clutch pedal is very stiff although gear change is very smooth, could the clutch need adjusting? or new clutch? This is my first diesel and i would very much appreciate any help anyone can give me.Also does anyone know where to get parts other than peugeot?....Many thanks in advance

A: I only have a comment about the "hissing and bubbling coolant" when the radiator cap is removed 24 hours after driving. Exhaust gases could still be entering and pressurising the cooling system (head gasket problem again!) You should smell these bubbles with your nose close to the COLD water, when you open the COLD radiator cap. If they smell like exhaust, you still have the head gasket problem. This would also explain the WHITE smoke (water vapour) coming from the exhaust pipe. There is a "chemical test" for this too. A mechanic puts a special radiator cap on your radiator. There is a small verical tube with a coloured liquid. When exhaust gases pass through this liquid, it changes colour, proving you have a head gasket leak/ water leak. You could also run the engine for 10 minutes with the radiator cap OFF. Observe the hot liquid passing by the fill neck. Look for bubbles coming up. Carefully smell these bubbles. They should NOT smell like exhaust. ARE YOU LOSING water? Replacing it in the plastic reservoir? DARK GREY or black smoke would be a better indication of a Head gasket/ oil line leak. I can't advise you about the stiff clutch pedal. If it ain't broke, don't fix it... is my motto. PS: your head gasket was changed, but was the head PLANED back to its original flatness? Was the head warped from its previous overheating problem?
