Why does my peugeot 406 diesel 1997 have 2 sump plugs?

Q: Why does my peugeot 406 diesel 1997 have 2 sump plugs? Is it cos it has a baffle or is the second plug just a blank for higher spec models with some kind of sender? Seems odd though to have 2

A: the ford crown vic and merc marquis also had 2 drain plugs. they were designed to miss the frame that goes under the engine. without the double sump it wouldn't hold enough oil volume to keep the oil from overheating
