Does a 1.4 205 gear box fit a 1.6 gti 205 many thanks to all?

Q:

A: The answer to this question is not as easy as YES! In fact, I want to say NO to you....read on. I hope you realize that the 205 engines were greatly modified after 1987. Do not try to interchange gearboxes from a pre-'87 XV, XW,XY engines with the post '87 engines, XU, TU. If you have an early 1.4 engine, this is from an early XY7 or XY8 engine. It could only fit a GTi engine from an early model, with the BH3 transmission mounted UNDER the engine. A later model 1.4 engine is the TU and there are 7 versions. There are three different gearboxes, the BE1, BE3, and MA . (MA is always fitted to TU engines. I AM NOT CERTAIN it will fit a gti with a 1.6 XU engine.) BE1 and BE3 gearboxes can have 4 or 5 speeds, so make sure you know what you have ahead of time!! SO YOU WANT A BE3 5-speed transmission! from a 1.6 litre XU engine for your gti car. The BH3 was available from 1989 and replaced the BE1. There are several refinements INTERNALLY, and the gear pattern has REVERSE in a different location (positioned opposite 5th gear. I have also read that the length of the linkage rods and the ease of adjustment is different between the BE1 and BE3. I recommend avoiding the older BE1. BOTH TRANSMISSIONS (from XU engines) take the same clutch, a 200 mm clutch, different from the TU engines/MA gearbox = 180mm clutch. (your 1.4 TU engine???) good luck. There will be very little clearance to remove these gearboxes, and it is easier to lower the gearbox DOWN to remove it. Provide enough room under your car, safely!
