from my 52 plate 307 have a grinding not whirring noise from front not engine related . wheel related?

Q:

A: The 307 has front brake pads on discs, not shoes on drums. The brake noise would occur when you release the brakes and the brake caliper piston does not fully retract, and it would stop when the pad was then worn down slightly. (Then just have the caliper piston removed and cleaned). My guess, from having this same problem 3 times before, in 17 years, owning 10 different small peugeots is.... WHEEL BEARING. However your car, a 307 seems a bit young for this to occur. It usually happens after 10 years on a Peugeot. The replacement wheel bearing does NOT have to be genuine Peugeot. I recommend you find an SKF BEARING dealer, and he will have a book to tell you the exact replacement. Here in Belgium, that is about 57 euro. Left and Right side bearings are the same item. POSSIBILITY #2: The Two drive shafts on your front wheel drive 307 are two different lengths. The right side (UK driver's side) is longer, and has a bearing in the middle. This bearing allows the long shaft to have an angle in the middle. There is a lot of stress on this mid-shaft bearing. A garage could put your car UP ON A LIFT, run the engine in gear, and listen to the grinding noise of this mid-shaft bearing. This driveshaft can be replaced with an aftermarket brand. I paid about 160 euro for my 1993 Peug 205 last year.
