Why are convertible cars heavier then their hardtop versions?

Q: I thought a canvas top was lighter than a metal roof

A: it needs a mechanism to retract the roof, which ultimately is going to weigh more than a thin slab of steel. you have the added weight of the motor that pulls the roof back and the relay system that activates it. thats a lot more metal than a roof. there is a style called a targa top that weighs less. my cars like that: the roof is basically a slab of vinyl that you can pick up and put in the trunk. if the fancy strikes you, you could just keep the roof in the garage and BAM even less weight than before. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Targa_top
