I have a 1993 buick regal with a 3.8 liter. I have replaced the cam&crank sensors and still get the codes ?

Q: The codes that come up are cam / crank sensor fault and cam fault. Both sensors are new and the codes still come up while driving. I have reset these codes a lot. It gives me multiple faults while driving on the freeway but not so many sitting and idling. Also at about 70 mph it seems to skip. Kind of like it has a miss or fuel was shut off. I know the ring on the harmonic balancer controls fuel and spark. Could this ring be bad? If so do I need to buy a whole new balancer? Any help would be great.

A: On the older 3.8L engines, there is a magnet thats sits inside a little recess on the camshaft gear. Over time that magnet will loosen, fall out and sit in the bottom of the oil pan. Best thing to do is to pull off the timing cover and see if the magnet is gone. If it is, you should see about a 1.5in hole in the outer edge of the cam gear where the magnet used to be. If its gone, replace both the cam and crank gears, timing chain and see if the codes return.
