Q: I'm a real car person, even work at the car museum, but I still do not know what the word "Crossover"means when referring to a new SUV, for example the Buick Enclave. And most other SUV. Exactly what does it mean? Thank you.

A: A crossover is an SUV-type vehicle that is built on a passenger-car chassis, drivetrain and suspension. That means CUVs are typically unibody construction and front-wheel-drive, or all-wheel-drive which is high-range only (no transfer case for low-range 4WD). True off-road capable SUVs would have a much beefier drivetrain and suspension, with a transfer case for low-range 4-wheel-drive. Basically a crossover gives one the room of an SUV with better fuel economy, but at the expense of off-road capability. Hope this helps.
