Q: Im looking into buying an older g body car and fixing it up. i was wondering out of the Buick Regal, Olds Cutlass Supreme, and Chevy Monte Carlo, which would be the all around best car to get. what are the differences between them?

A: I take it you mean ones from the 1970s? Well, these cars are all based on the same platform, meaning the mechanicals (frame and suspension) are shared, hence the G-body designation. In 1978, the engines were shared throughout the lineup (also includes the Pontiac Grand Prix). Each of these cars is tuned to meet different needs. The Buick is likely to be the softest-riding of the group, unless you are talking about a Grand National or GNX (those are probably too much $$ to consider). The Pontiac and Olds are the most sporty of the group. The Grand Prix had a tuned suspension for a much sportier ride and handling. The Monte Carlo is luxurious and probably more in line with the Buick. The Olds is probably easiest to find, as it was one of the best-selling cars of its time. In 1976, over 500,000 were sold. The 1978-1988 versions are smaller, better on gas, and are now becoming interesting among collectors. The rear suspension on these models will tend to move up through the trunk if the car has been subjected to road salt in winter. Having owned a Cutlass Supreme ('74) and having driven the others, I'd say it's really up to you. Styling was everything with these cars, so you may be better off to pick the one that looks best to you. Choose a well-cared-for example for your hard-earned money. Happy hunting!
