A: It depends which particular diesel engine you mean there are several pre-1995 Defender diesel engines. I presume you mean the 300tdi engine as this was used from 1993, but I 'll give figures for the other diesels too. These figures are taken from the buyers guide in Land Rover Owner Magazine. 300tdi (1994-98): 23-32mpg 200tdi (1991-94): 23-32mpg 2.5Td (1986-90): 21-27mpg 2.5 Normally aspirated diesel (1984-90) 23-28mpg 2.25 Normally aspirated diesel (1983/4-1990) 20-25mpg I run a 200tdi Defender which achieves around 30mpg when driven sensibly and many 300tdi owners claim similar figures. LRO magazine has just carried out a 'real world test' of the Defender 300tdi and they achieved 29.6mpg which I think is a realistic figure. I hope this helps, let me know if there's anything else!
