Q: Recently we have replaced the timing and a/c belt in our 2001 DaeWoo Lanos. But now we have a loud screeching noise coming from the engine. I've heard random suggestions from people that have heard the noise.. They say Pulley, Water Pump, etc.. Any ideas?! Someone else suggested a water pump bearing? Someone else suggested a water pump bearing?

A: here's what to do to see if the problem is a BELT or a PULLEY. take the car (off or running, doesn't matter) open hood. get a bottle of water, or if you have it some belt dressing (either is fine, water is easiest. they both work as a quick lubricant) poor some of the water (or lubricant) onto the belt to get it well lubricated. if the screeching stops you need a new belt. if the screeching continues it is one of the pulleys, most likely a tensioner. if you have any questions let me know, i have done this many many times and it hasn't seemed to failed me yet. now. if the noise is not even coming from anywhere on the belt or any of the pulleys, it could be something like your power steering pump. too much fluid or not flowing right causes it to make a very loud obnoxious noise. too much pressure on the fluid and it causes bubbles to form and they have no where to go, or something. i always forget exactly what it is. but the fact is the power steering pump will scream. but most likely it is a belt//tensioner
