Q:

A: The up side is that you will never have to balance the carbs, ajust twin linkages and generally mess about with the twin/triple set up found on a 60's/70's Jaguar. The down side is that you may very well stifle the engine at high revs if the carb size is not big enough, and if you have a huge carb it will probably tick over poorly. You may also find that the center cylinders (those closest to the carb) run richer than the outer cylinders (those furthest away) due to the vaccuum effect of the differing length manifold pipes. If you use little rpm, then you will probably be fine, but if you are the type to thrash the car keep close watch on the tappet clearences as if any cylinder runs to lean you may get erosion of the exhaust valves/seats. The SU is actually a great 'multi purpose' carb, as it's variable venturi mixes fuel well over a given rev range. So your single carb plan may indeed not be a bad idea for economy and ease of use. I suspect there may be some peak power loss though. Thanks for an interesting question!
