California Engine Swap laws with a nissan sentra?

Q: Okay i have a 1996 Nissan Sentra GXE and the engine in it is a GA16DE witch is a 1.6L engine but i looked for a more better engine and i came acrossed a SR20DE engine witch is a 2.0L engine its a perfect match but the only thing is the SR20 engine is for a 1998+ Nissan Sentra SE. So i want to know if i can put that engine in my 96 Sentra cause its a bigger engine and different car model. and also to if i can get introuble if i do a little after market upgrading on it. please give me your answer cause i am trying to do this soon.

A: Make sure the donnor car (your going to buy a complete donnor car right?) has a good engine wiring harness you will need it to convert over the 2.0 liter motor will only work with the 2.0 liter gear box and front axles. There are lots of differences between the weak 1.6 and the 2.0 liter powerplants bigger clutch and transmission bell housing for one.. You may also need the body wiring harness and main wiring loom under the dash and 2.0 liter instrument cluster to pull this off sucessfully. When you swap it over you state you want to modify things. That is where you will get into trouble. California emissions laws and the ability to have you car smog checked. If you thought engine swap was just plug and play (forget that).
