Q: I'm trying to find one that's not been riced up. Unfortunately all of the used ones around here have been turned into rice cookers. What was the best year for the 300? Wow, Thanks guys. A lot of great answers from all of you.

A: If money is less important than quality: the 1995 model is usually considered the best year because it didn't have the more strict EPA regulations the 96 model had to pass and made 20 more HP. Both the 95 and 96 models had the OBDII ecu systems that had more computing power than the 90-94 models. The 95 model also can accept larger aftermarket fuel injectors without requiring intake manifold machining and was the last year that featured variable intake cam timing. (similar to Honda's VTEC) The '95-'96 HICAS (4-wheel steering system) used electric actuators rather than the hydraulic system used on older models-reducing weight and failure likely-hood. However, the 95+96 models cost a good deal more than the other years offering only slight advantages. Keep in mind all Z32 (chassis code for 90-96 300zx) model years can be modified to the same output levels. There are no strong or weak years in the aftermarket realm. If you are of the "best bang for the buck" mindset- the 1991 models are what I would recommend. By 91, all of the first year "bugs" had been fixed, all the performance was retained and was the first year an airbag was available. Conclusion: 95-96 = most desirable + $$$$ 91= less $ + same good looks, same great performance
