Q: I bought a 1997 eclipse gs-t today. The only thing wrong with it was that the 2 front bottom tie rods had to be replaced but the guy i bought it from paid for them both! Ok so here's the question. I know there is a big debate about eclipse reliability... So if this car is bone stock and the only thing im going to do to it is put on a cold air and a 3 in exaust, will it last me? it has 104000 miles on it. If i drive it normally and not beat on it will it last? It also has a new water pump and a new timing belt. Please tell me what u think. I think eclipse's get a bad name for reliability because people beat on them....Is that true? Experience is the key to this question! Ya im lucky the car i bought was a guys wife's car!!!! No torture there!

A: They are reliable cars. The problem is that EVERYONE beats the LIVING SHI.T out of them. Because they are soo cheap for such high performance, and the word "turbo" attracts soo many people, many of which don't know anything about cars. They buy the car, RAPE it, then end up selling it because they think its a piece of crap, after they do repeated 7k clutch dumps at every stop light, and never even bothered to change the coolant, oil, or spark plugs. Then they bolt up a HUGE turbo, still have stock fuel and NO TUNE and try to run 46psi. They blow their motor and call the cars "unreliable" Hopefully the car you bought hasn't beat on too hard. As long as you do basic maintenance and do things like installing a turbo timer, your car should last you a while.
