Q:

A: Cheapest route: Remove all unnecessary weight: Rear Seat, Passenger Seat, Carpet, Sound deadening material, door panels and trunk trim., Radio and speakers, bumpers (behind the facias) and then begin lightening parts that are important by drilling out excess material. Lighter wheels would also be an upgrade reducing unsprung weight. Improve the engine's breathing. I assume you do not have a turboed eclipse (If you had a GST or GSX you'd have notified us). To do this invest in a quality Cold Air Intake, Header, Down Pipe and an exhaust with a high flow catalytic converter and flow through muffler. If you want more power still, A nitrous set up would be the quick and easy way. Focusing on performance after you've lightened up the car you could focus on the handling and braking. Convert the rear drums to disc brakes and upgrade the front to a 4 or six piston caliper and a larger disc. You could then look at an adjustable coil over suspension to lower your car and dial it in for the specific conditions you drive in. A lowering spring wont give you the flexibility of the coil overs but would help. Strut tower braces lower tie bars and a few other parts could help the handling too. These are the things a weekend racer would do.
