1999 Mercury Cougar Engine Tag?

Q: I need a new engine for my Cougar and I found one but the seller needs my engine tag so the engine will be specific with the other components of my Cougar. I have talked with a Mercury Dealer and they didn't know where to find it. I spoke with different garages I took it into and they didn't know anything about an engine tag. Is there a website I can input my VIN # and pull up my engine tag? Or another dealer or # to call to find it? Or even somewhere on my car? Thanks.

A: the person selling the motor is probably looking to see if you have a return fuel system or a returnless system. this depends on your cougar's "birth date". look at your driverside door panel and it should give you that date. other than the return vs. returnless fuel system for this motor there are no true differences in the v6 versions that were placed in these cars (which i am assuming you have) until they changed the displacement in '01 (i believe that is the correct year). if you have the 4 cyl it is the same motor that came in the focus of that year also and unfortunately i own a v6 cougar and don't know much about the 4-banger. the v6 is the same motor as the contour or the mystique, the duratec. realistically if you are getting a motor out of any cougar 99 and up you will be fine. this is a quote from newcougar.org forum explaining this: Basicly what they are asking is to make sure the 2 fuel rails are the same. You can confirm this by asking the build date of the other motor and compare to yours. If before may 1999 you have return style fuel rail (2 lines going to your fuel rail) If after may 1999 you have a returnless (1line) If you dont mind the work, you can take any engine (return or returnless) and just swap out the LIM from one engine to the other to make it work. by the way if the guys at the merc dealer couldn't tell you this i sure wouldn't be taking anything i own to them for any type of work.
