Q: This question came up last night, so I thought I would post it here. I know years ago, they used to put mercury in thermometers. What is the red stuff they put in them now? How does it work?
A: It is a mix of alcohol and water becaus alcohol cant freeze but, like most things, it expands when hot and gets smaller when cold
