2002 mercury cougar resets tach/speedo on ignition?

Q: When I start the car, it sometimes resets the tach/speedo. The needles travel to the right, to the limits and then come back to the normal position and begin to read engine rpm as usual. Any ideas?

A: This is normal. Your cluster goes through a self test every time you start your car. It should do this every time.
