What should I chek out when a 1999 Mercury Sable LS has, or is about to reach 60,000 miles?

Q: I own the car mentioned about and it is about 1,500 miles away from 60,000 miles and I just wanted some advice on what to check as fall kicks in. I've already had an oil change 2 weeks ago and Im having a solenoid replaced for other reasons.

A: You could go with new plugs and plug wires. Air filter change. Check the Coolant protection level. Check the brake fluid. Look at your serpentine belt, change if it looks rough. Tires are another thing heading into the fall. Change the transmission fluid and filter adding a bottle of Lucus transmission additive, you can also change the power steering filter and drain the fluid, they make Lucus for PS systems also. The latter of the two seems drastic, but it is something that most people don't even do at all. And it is getting about the time in your cars life to be done... When you get to 90,000 I would change the water pump guts, if you still have her. My wife has a 96 Sable, yours is like hers. The water pump just comes apart and on the inside is a propeller. Her propeller just busted into 3 pieces for no reason at all one day. Left her stranded. The water pump guts only costs $60... Small price to pay when a roll back costs that much. I rebuilt the whole engine not knowing what had happened to begin with and it had water dripping out the exhaust. Later to find out I didn't have any water pumping, I discovered the propellor busted.
