Q: How many people have 1997-2002 E320? Do your key remote have good signal to the car...or do you have to be 1-2 feet close for the car to pick up the signal? I do......I've replaced the batteries in the remote but it still doesn't work distance from the car...it only works when I get 1 to 2 feet by the car..what is the problem..what could be wrong?
A: If your car is 1998 or newer, more than likely you have a problem with the Radio Frequency transmission/reception, its either the receiver in the car (antenna has to be replaced) or your RF transmitter in the key has gone bad. After 1998 Mercedes Smartkey remotes use both Infrared and Radio Frequency, the IR is picked up by receivers in door handles (when close to car) and the RF is picked up by the radio antenna (used in long distances when key is not pointed at an IR receiver). If its a 97, its only IR and you have to be close. Most places that specialize in Mercedes should have a key tester in their workshop.
