Q: HC GPM reading should be 2.0000 - it read 3.8756 CO GPM reading should be 20.0000 - it read 63.6603 There are 215,000 miles on the clock but it runs beautifully. It passed emissions in California at the beginning of the year but failed here in Colorado. I can't afford to pay the extortionate mechanics rate and wondered if there was a magical fix to my problem?

A: In small concentrations, acetone has no effect. In large concentrations, it eats rubber. Other than that, don't expect any change. If you want to try a chemical fix, add in a LOT of ethanol, perhaps as much as 15 or 20% (no guarantee on your engine longevity with this mix). Nor do oil and oil filters have a significant effect on emissions, although the air filter could be partially responsible. Finally, unlike a Diesel engine, timing should be automatically corrected by your ECU. So gas engines are more tolerant of chain stretch. What you want to do is have it checked out by a competent mechanic. The problem could be an oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, or air mass sensor. Replacing parts at random will cost more than having it done right by a pro.
