Q:

A: There are many ways to answer your question but the truth is that you really don't need to use premium gas all the time, as long as you put a cleaning additive in your gas tank every now and then. The 'experts' will all tell you that you must always use premium gasoline because other types of unleaded gasoline will eventually reduce engine performance and cause knocking and pinging. This is not entirely true, and its mostly bunk perpetrated by the petrochemicals industry (because they want you to buy premium gasoline, which is more expensive because it is treated with expensive additives), and even more bunk perpetrated by the automakers themselves because they want to maintain the image that their engines are superior and therefore require 'superior' gasoline. But, as a scientist, I will tell you that octane is octane. As long as you're not constantly pushing the engine to the max (high speeds, lots of hill climbing, carrying really heavy cargo), the difference between 87, and 91, and 93 octane isn't really all that significant to the engine's performance.
