Q: im repairing a 94 lincoln towncar with a V8 overheadcam engine. My scanner said the EGR had the problem. We replaced that part and the engine still stutters like if it had a timing issue and at time it even misfires. The coils seemed to be ok. The engine has good compression. Is there something else we can look at? Any ideas on what to do in this situation?

A: I agree with Rudy H 100% on EVERY part of the post! I am willing to bet my life the trouble code you read more specifically stated "EGR flow insufficient". On '92 to '95 model year Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis/Lincoln Town Car vehicles equipped with the 4.6L SOHC V8 with the aluminum intake, a very common thing to happen is for the EGR passages to clog up with carbon, restricting EGR flow. The proper repair for this, is to remove the throttle body AND the 90 degree adaptor to the back of the intake manifold (four 8mm bolts). Clean or replace the throttle body gasket (Ford part number F1AZ-9H486-A for $3.43). Clean out the grooves with tune-up or carburetor cleaner thoroughly of ALL carbon deposits. For more information, look up Ford's TSB article number 96-23-4. This particular article details the exact procedure to repair the exact symptom you describe. Hope this helps.
