1989 lincoln continental. In msg. display center check DCL warning sign starts blinking. Whats the problem?

Q: I have a 1989 Lincoln Continental in almost showroom condition which I ocassionally use as luxury or as a back up car. Last time I got in it, "CHECK DCL" warning signal started blinking & beeping in the MSG display center. I don't have the owner's manual for it. I called the dealer, they want me to bring the car in so that they can check & charge me an arm and a leg. I was just wondering what that means, how seriously should I take that annoying beeping & what's the solution to it? Also, how to find a owner's manual for it without going thru the dealer. Any comments, suggestions, solutions will be much appreciated. Thanks.

A: That means "Data Connection Link" and assuming all else is well, the contacts on the message center unit need to be cleaned.
