this is going to sound stupid but is my gas gage working or not?

Q: I have a 1989 jeep cherokee and the last time I drove it my gas gage was bouncing back and forth between just over a quarter of a tank of gas and being on empty. It's always seemed to work before based on mileage and amount of gas it takes to fill up. However this time I cant' go by that as my driving pattern has been way different and I have made some modifications that may or may not have increased my mpg. What is likely to be the more accurate reading? the gage bounces around while driving on a flat stretch of road.

A: The fuel gauges on these year jeeps sucked. Also; the fuel pump is in the gas tank, and it needs fuel covering it to jeep it cool. If you run your jeep on low fuel often, you will burn out the pump much faster (about a $600 repair job). I'd just recommend never letting it get below a half a tank. You may also have control (relay, ECU) issues going to your pump / float assembly.
