Q: I hear an annoying clicking noise, coming from under the dash and behind the radio, that happens particularly when I decelerate. The frequency of the clicking Isa directly to the speed of the car. The noise sounds something like like a speedometer cable rubbing against something, but from what I've read there is no speedometer cable on Jeeps. This sound is driving me crazy. Anyone have an idea on what to do to solve this problem? I went as far as polling out the instrument panel (with the tach, speedometer, gages, etc.), looking for a speedometer cable, but its all electronic. If there is a cable coming off the transmission, it must go to somethis that gets converted to an electronic signal that then goes to the instrument panel. Thaks all. I will try your suggestions tomorrow. I found the problem. The cable that runs from the Quadra-Trac II shifter to the transmissions was touching the driveshaft. I put a wire tie to hold it up. I found this the hard way by un-neccessarily removing too many components from the dash board. But once I touch the cable to the Quadra Trac shifter while driving, I knew that was it.

A: You have probably figured it out already. Speedo cables often tick or click. It may need lube, or the gear either on the trans or the speedometer end may have chipped. You can disconnect the transmission end of the cable and drive the car, seeing if the noise stopps. If it does, it's the cable or the speedo. If it doesn't, it's none of the things I just mentioned. Then reconnect the trans end, disconnect the speedo end of the cable. If the noise is still there, it's the cable. If it stops, it's the speedometer head. You can check these in any order you want.
