Q: I own a 1992 jeep cherokee limited and i was wondering if the engine would fit into a 1997 jeep grand cherokee. they both have the i6 4.0l engine. and they both have the same distributor setup. what makes the difference? I consulted a junkyard on this question and all they said is that it fits from 1992-95 only. What is the major difference in these engines. Look identically the same. Is there anything you have to swap or will it just plain not work? thanks

A: A 1992 Cherokee is OBD1 emissions while the 1997 is an OBD2. With that I'm not sure of the other differences, but I'm sure that the intakes are probably different and the exhaust as well. You'll have a different computer mapping with the OBD2 and possibly more O2 sensors.
