94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Pump issues

Q: I just had my second fuel pump installed on my 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee. (220,000 mile). Might there be something about how I operate the vehicle that is contributing to the fuel pump wearing out? Does a 94 have andemergency fuel shut off that some of the other postings referred to? How do you tell if it's a fuel pump or that shut off module?

A: Those years of Jeep GC went through fuel pumps. This is because they switched to a plastic material for the tank. The plastic would corrode from the gasoline after time. Little chunks of plastic would fall off into the tank. When the gas level gets low, the fuel pump will suck up the chips and clog or ruin the pump. You could clean or change the fuel tank. The cheapest method is to always fill the tank when you get about half empty, this way the chips won't clog the pump.
