why is my jeep shutting off?

Q: I have a 1990 jeep cherokee larado. it would run for about 3 seconds then shut off. a mechanic said the fuel pump was bad and put a new one in yesterday. the problem now is it will run for maybe 5 minutes then shut off. if i let it sit for a half of hour or so, it will start again for a few minutes. i dont understand these vehicles. can somebody tell me whats probably going on? thanks........

A: when you change fuel pumps you should also changed the fuel filter and run injector cleaner through it a easy way to tell if it is fuel related turn the ignition to on position you will hear a whine that is the fuel pump pressurizing go under the hood on top of the engine you find the injectors but there should also be a valve stem looking thing this is to release fuel pressure in the system is the system is good there will be a squirt or spray of fuel out of the valve if it just bubbles or kinda just fill up then you know the problem is with the system possibly the filter try this and if you find it not to spray changed fuel filter it should be changed any ways with a new pump good luck
