My car starts sometimes, then sounds like it is going to start and does not. It is a 96 hyundai elantra. ?

Q: It sounds like it will start and sometimes it just takes trying to crank it a couple of times. Others it takes a hour or two for it to crank. One mechanic has looked at it and kept it overnight, but once it was towed there it started right up. Two other mechanics I have called and they do not know the problem either.

A: Same crap happens to me, although I have yet to figure out the problem I did take it to an electromechanics shop to get diagnose ($80 just with that) Since they couldn't find a problem they said it was the ignition switch (another $200) which had nothing to do with the problem, trust me; it were an ignition switch if you get NO reaction at all, so don't change it, they just want money. I'm thinking my problem is definitely a fuel related problem. I would check the fuel pump. Try sticking your key in the ignition and turning it to the first position 'ON' and try listening to the fuel pump (usually under the back seat in the fuel tank) you should hear a quite whining noise. It is initially filling up the fuel line with gasoline for your engine to start. Another way to check it is to have a friend help you try to start the car while you spray 'Starter Fluid' in the air filter housing of your engine; basically the canal that your air takes from when it gets sucked into the air filter until it reaches your engine (throttle). If the car stays on while you spray the starter fluid and dies as soon as you stop, then you know your engine is not getting fuel and at that point it's 99.99% your fuel pump. Good Luck
