Q: I have a 1988 GMC C1500 Extended Cab Step-side pickup truck with a THM700R4 automatic transmission, a 5.7L V8 350 engine and the axel ratio is 4.11. I do not know how much the truck weights but I do know that it has a Class 4 towing hitch with a 2" ball and it is only 2 wheel drive. There is no extra accessories attached to the truck. Its all stock equipment. Its in great shape and only has 100,000 miles on the drivetrain and plan to use the truck to tow a 20' enclosed trailer loaded with farm equipment back and forth on the highway and sometimes the interstate and just want to make sure that the truck will handle it fine. The trailer weights around 5,500 pounds when loaded inclding the weight of the trailer itself. Thank you for your time.
A: Max gross trailer weight is somewhere around 5000-6000 pounds. I'm guessing your truck has a GVW of 6000-6600lbs, so that gives you a carrying capacity of about1000lbs (don't know actual truck weight). For GCWR, I want to say it is 10k-12k (max total weight of truck AND trailer). It is to your benefit that you have the 4.10 ratio! Even then your going to be close to max with the 5500lb trailer. Yeah, it will pull it. Lock that 700R4 out of OD on the hills, you don't want it to unlock the TC and burn up that tranny. Your hitch is more than heavy enough for what the truck is capable of pulling.
