Carburetor Problem on 53' Chevy Truck?

Q: I'm rebuilding a 1953 Chevy Truck. I got It running good at idle but when i give it some gas it starts to sputter. I replaced the carburetor, distributor, wires but can't figure whats giving me trouble. The timing is good and its getting good compression. Any suggestions?

A: This could be a timing problem. The centrifugal advance may not be working in the distributor or possibly the vacuum advance is connected to the wrong port on the carb. Also, as others have mentioned, the accelerator pump may not be giving a proper squirt for acceleration. Try to build the engine speed slowly. If it will accelerate slowly but not quickly the problem likely lies with eh accelerator pump. Also, listen to the sounds that the carb makes when it is sputtering. Does it sound like the fuel flow is uneven. You may have a problem with the fuel pump or simply a clogged fuel filter. Often old cars that have set a while will have trash in the fuel system. Check for adequate fuel flow. Mike http://www.mikestrawbridge.com
