A: Its useless. Its the "manual" gear shifter for your automatic. It basically lets you tell the computer when to shift, however if you just rev it and dont shift the computer will shift for you, and it wont let you downshift until you get to speeds low enough for that gear, so if basically still an automatic. I have the tiptronic in my A4 and its slower than just letting the computer shift for you. My would stay away from it if you can, if not just never use it.
