A: Chips do seem to be more reliable for VAG cars compared to stand alone ECUs. If you want one that is customizable then look at GIAC or Unitronic. GIAC has a free add-on software you can download called lemmiwinks. Its great and you can do it all on your laptop. Unitronic has a similar system called Unisettings v1.4. Both are very smooth softwares with great gains.
